Cyber Attacks on India Are Minimum

The government has taken numerous measures for safeguarding the Indian cyber-space with appropriate synergies with all supervising agencies even though cyber attack on India is minimum. This statement was made by Ravi Shankar Prasad, the IT Minister, this week to the media in an interview.

As per the data reported to the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In), a sum of 65 cases comprising ransomware were posted from 2014 to 2017 till June, he further added in the Lok Sabha. The details of the financial effect of these cases are not given to CERT-In. CERT-In offers remediation and technical support, he said at the time of Question Hour.

Prasad claimed that the government was very aware about the safety of the cyber sector and was captivating pro-active measures for its fortification. “India is turning out to be a digital power. We have a complicated network for cyber safety. On the other hand, the cyber attacks on India are very less, but we are at all times alert,” he further claimed at the time of Question Hour.

Referring the hackers as digital fugitives, the minister claimed that data fortification was very vital for any nation since “information is new resource.” Prasad claimed that various security organizations were operating in close harmonization for the fortification of the cyber sector and the government has already comprised a committee of 10 members, led by Justice B.N Srikrishna. Srikrishna is a former Supreme Court judge. The committee is formed to focus on information protection structure for the nation.

The committee will make particular recommendations to the government on the standards to be measured for data fortification and also propose a draft data fortification bill. Prasad also claimed that the data associated to Aadhaar was totally safe and its server was present in the country.

“Broadcast of ransomware dubbed WannaCrypt/WannaCry has been reported in most of the nations around the globe comprising India from May 12, 2017. Broadcast of one more ransomware dubbed Petya was also reported from June 27, 2017. Thirty four cases have been given to CERT-In from individuals and organizations concerning infections of Petya and WannaCry ransomware,” he further added in a statement to the media.
